I have a set of these NiMH rechargeable batteries and I use them constantly. Snapping shots with my digital camera, having a flashlight ready when I need it, and of course there is the TV remote, but after hundreds of recharge cycles, these batteries are still going strong.
So, I say, no more 4 packs of disposable AA batteries for $2.99. The cost is too high on the environment and your pocketbook. For such a disposable product in constant demand, batteries are a big problem. I burn through them too quickly to use a disposable product, and so do you. Most people just drop them in the trash. Unless we dispose of them properly, the chemicals inside them can leak into the earth around our landfills.
Now, the rechargable technology has gotten much better, and the Nickel-Metal Hydride (NiMH) is the best on the market. There are several different brands on the market, and Sony is one of the more respected brands in the world. Get these Sony 2500 Rechargeable Batteries, and you'll never go back to alkaline batteries again. I keep two in the charger at all times, so I always have a freshly charged pair, and I never run out of power. It's great, plus it's the right thing to do.
