Time Magazine-When the Big Guys Go Green

The publishing giant jumps on the sustainable bandwagon

From grassroots to the big companies out there, the changes are happening. When you see a company like Time Magazine doing everything it can to go green, you can realize it’s beginning to happen all over. And if Time is going green, just think of the precedent it sets for other publishing companies.

Time Inc. touts themselves as the industry leader in sustainable development. I won’t argue with that because they have facts and figures to back that claim up. For example, they have almost tripled sustainable forest paper usage from 25 percent up to a whopping 69 percent! That right there deserves a pat on the proverbial back, and I would like to add it’s about time, don’t you?

Check out what they are doing about minimizing their very own carbon footprint. They have literally become the first publisher to do this by monitoring where they get their products from, and how they dispose of the waste afterwards. That’s almost like, how many steps do you take when you open up a granola bar and throw the wrapper away. Now then, can you make that more efficient and take one less step to the trash? Obviously, the best thing would be to make edible wrappers, and until Time comes out with edible magazines, this is about as good as it can get.

They are also promoting a campaign named Remix, in the attempt to get their magazines recycled, and they have asked their paper suppliers to reduce CO2 emissions by 20%. All this from the nations largest publisher, and my hats off to them for taking this lead.

The switch in Time’s collective head went off about 2 years ago when scientists the world over decided with all the evidence on hand, global warming is a reality. They have also been one of the main supporters of green articles, included the famous ’51 Things We Can Do to Save the Environment.’ After that, they almost forced their own hand, and when you think about it, they couldn’t sustain their own views if they didn’t hop on the sustainable bandwagon. And that they did, in full force!

As I mentioned in the beginning, the grassroots movements of green have already taken hold and the changes are there for all to see. But when the big companies like Time go as green as possible and take the lead, they set an example for the whole world to see.
