The New Jersey Wind Farm

Power to the People

It doesn't take a genius to know that there is a lot of offshore wind that blows through your hair. It is nearly constant, it is strong, and New Jersey is going to harvest it. The $1 billion plan has been approved to build offshore windmills. They will be built about 16 to 20 miles out in the ocean, where wind is virtually constant, and will be able to power about 125,000 homes. This is an absolutely visionary plan, as there are currently no off shore wind farms anywhere in the US. People are so optimistic about the plan, both Delaware and Rhode Island have also approved their own offshore wind farms.

Perhaps the biggest boost for this project comes from the fact that by going green like this, there may be upwards of 500 new jobs created for the construction and service of this wind farm. Not only is this an environmentally friendly way to get energy, but it also opens up the employment market and creates jobs! This is exactly what the growing green market can do all the time.We have several wind farms here in Wisconsin, and all of them slightly ease the burden of electricity, as well as keeping pollutants out of the air. As you know, some people consider these giant windmills unsightly. Personally, I think they are beautiful, and considering what they are doing for the environment, beauty is not just skin deep. Windmill eye pollution is a serious concern in New Jersey, where droves of people flock to the beaches every summer. However, these off shore wind farms are going to be so far away, they will appear as mere pinpricks. Building them at that distance keeps the scenery optically pure, and the beauty of the sand and the surf won't be compromised by these huge windmills lurking nearby. My hat is off to New Jersey—Delaware and Rhode Island too—for taking this bold step and building a wind farm when no other US state has done so before. It's a terrific idea, and will ultimately give more power to the people.
