Every year we dispose of a billion tires worldwide! Though recycling tires is possible, it is not always a practical option. For tires to be made into usable material for other products, the metal inside them must be removed, and the only way of doing so is with special machinery that makes the process both inefficient and expensive.
Since landfills are minimizing their acceptance of tires, we all stand to benefit from a new process that will make tire recycling cheaper and easier. Now two Australian companies are leading the charge.
CSIRO and VR TEK are working on a new tire recycling process that will separate the tires into sections based on the material composition. This three-step process that will help ensure that usable tire materials get used in more products than ever before.
“Given that global demand for rubber currently exceeds supply,” says CSIRO, “industry’s inability to economically recycle tires also represents lost opportunity in terms of potential resource efficiency and conservation gains.”
It’s expected that this new technology will increase tire recycling by 50 percent and, in turn, further the greening of the auto industry.
