I am always looking for better and more efficient ways to cook food, and by now everyone should know the Green Guy LOVES food. What I don’t like doing is turning on the oven or the stove if I don’t have to. Stove tops burn about 2500 watts of juice, and ovens burn around 3500 watts, so I always keep that in mind whenever I cook.
I realize stoves and ovens are a very integral part of life and I wouldn’t give mine up, that’s for sure. There are just times when they need to be used to their fullest, especially around holidays, family get togethers, and even for big family dinners. So, no, I don’t think we MyGreenClickers want to dispense with the family stove at anytime soon.
Here's my alternative: the George Foreman grills. This baby is efficiency personified. They average using around 500 watts of power, and both the top and the bottom are heated. Any type of item that’s put inside of it will cook twice as fast since both sides are being cooked at the same time. Heck, a good quality microwave burns up about 700 to 1000 watts of power, so the Foreman grill even has a microwave beat.
And because it cooks so fast and uses less power, you use less energy and save more money on electric bills. They come in sizes to fit any need too. From a one-serving size to family-sized grills, where you can put 5 or 6 chicken breasts inside and still cook everything in very little time, all the while cutting back on energy and doing it with much less electricity than your stove top or oven.
They are actually pretty easy to come by on the cheap. Rummage sales seem to be a good place to start, but second hand stores are also a place to find them. My thought has always been an appliance like this that's so useful, easy to clean, and energy efficient, should never be found at a rummage sale. It should have its own place in every kitchen and be used, always!
So, get yourself a Foreman Grill. Go out to the local co-op and bring home some organic greens. Take a couple of pieces of chicken breasts (preferably organic) or even debone some thighs, sprinkle a little curry powder or some seasoned salt over the top, plug in the grill, and cook for about 5 or 6 minutes. That’s it, and you have a terrific dinner right there that’s just as good for your tummy as it is for your pocketbook, the environment and especially for your piece of mind.
