Boo! Ah!
Are you ready for Hallow-green this October?
It may sound "candy-corny" but there are many ways to reduce your carbon Boo-tprint on this spooky holiday.
Costumes are an essential part of this holiday’s festivities. Whether you’re trick-or-treating, or attending a costume party, be smart and creative when it comes to a costume. It’s easy to buy a ready-made costume from a number of the Halloween stores that spring up around this time, but it’s also pretty wasteful. Most people will wear the costumes only once or maybe twice and a lot of them are costly.
You don’t have to have a store-bought costume to look great. Get creative and make your own costume, and borrow pieces from friends if you need to. Your costume will be more inspired and you can be sure no one else will be wearing it. You could even try hunting around in a second-hand shop for a great eco-friendly costume.
You might already have a few of the store-bought kinds lying around, and your friends might too. So why not recycle your costumes and host a costume exchange?
If you’re hosting a party, choose organic and local foods, and pick decorations made from recycled materials without a lot of excess plastic packaging. There are many easy ways to get crafty and make your own decorations. Or choose natural gourds and pumpkins as your décor (grown locally, of course). E-mail an E-vite instead of a paper invitation to save green and paper and use recycled or recyclable plates, cups, and napkins.
Candy is a big part of Halloween fun. If you’re buying candy to give out, choose natural, organic products like fair-trade certified organic chocolates or naturally flavored goodies. Even natural products are still culprits of excess individual plastic packaging, which may be hard to get around if you’re searching for treats, but choosing eco-friendly products is still better than traditionally mass-produced candy.
Fill your Halloween with traditional games and fun that don’t have to come from the store and you’ll save money and the planet!
