Going Green, A Little At A Time

Small Changes That Make Big Differences

The concept of going green can be overwhelming. There is no magical solution, and we can’t snap our fingers and turn the world green. It doesn’t work like that unless you are filthy rich, in which case you can just decide on a whim and a bank account to go green all at once. Or unless you are Amish, which means you are essentially born “green.”

For most of us, however, greening our lives takes a step at a time, and usually baby steps at that. I go as green as possible in many different ways, but I am not completely green. It’s almost impossible to be completely green in a modern society where disposable products are considered good. But there are little ways to go green that you may not even think of. No, not mainstream stuff like recycling, walking, and three-minute showers. Those are all good, but here are a few ways that are just as good, but not as well known.

Fireplace and/or stove ashes can be used as a salt or sand alternative for slippery sidewalks or stairs in the winter. If you burn a lot of wood to keep down heating costs, those ashes are better used for icy areas than thrown away,

Turn off your car in drive-thrus. The old saying that it takes more gas to start a car then to idle it for 30 seconds is not true. It may have been in the old carburetor days, but fuel injection autos of today meter out gas so precisely, idling for any length of time in a drive-thru a waste of gas.

Budget for going green. Even if green, biofriendly products are more expensive then chemically laced types, and you want to switch, you don’t have to switch all at once. Budget yourself and get one green product every other week, or even once a month.

Television sets are huge energy slaves, and a lot of people fall asleep to them. Instead of TV, try turning on the radio. Radios burn up a fraction of the cost of the TV, and once asleep, your body will never know the difference.

Don’t leave your coffee pot or tea pot on simmer. Transfer those hot liquids into an insulated container. You’ll be pouring cup after cup anyway, so just pour it straightaway into something insulated, and you’ll be good to go for hours.

We all want to do our part, and I always love finding out different ways to be a little bit greener (short of becoming Amish, that is)!
