Getting ready to celebrate the 4th of July? Celebrate your independence from environmentally harmful living by having an Earth-friendly, eco-conscious celebration! Try something new this weekend and make the 4th of July the day you start living green once and for all.
Rethink your Barbecue
It’s not surprising that according to Science Daily, over 60 million barbecues are going to light up this 4th of July, and burn the equivalent of 2,300 acres of forest. But you don't have to dump your barbecue off at the eco-station for recycling just yet. You can buy organic and natural charcoal lumps for your charcoal grill. If you’re looking at a new barbecue because you simply have to do some outdoor cooking, remember infrared grills are the most eco-friendly. They heat fast, use the least energy and use less gas. Oh, and one last thing – natural gas is the most energy efficient.
Take it one green step further – skip the barbecue!
Pick your jaw up off the floor, you read this right. While barbecuing is delicious, it does have an environmental impact. Why not skip the barbecue this year and picnic out at a park, instead? Sandwiches, roasted chicken, salads, desserts, all can be packed in reusable containers and enjoyed outside.
Let your taste-buds declare independence!
Independence from pre-packaged, nutritionally void, chemically filled, preservative marinated mystery food, that is. This is the perfect time of year to head to the farmer’s markets for local organic produce. Feel like being even more radical? Skip the meat all together this weekend and go Veggie for the Fourth!
Drop four wheels for two
Try concentrating on your local area and attend events you can either walk or ride your bicycle to. You’ll have a healthy and fun bike ride and oh, that lunch will taste so good!
Plant a tree for you and me
Sure this is something we all should do on Arbor Day, but on a day when we are celebrating our beautiful country, what could be better than adding a new tree to your back yard, a local park, or a local senior’s center. Trees add oxygen to the environment and remind us all we’re all connected and need to look out for each other.
So green up, everyone and celebrate the 4th of July with some mindful choices and a lot of fun.
