I always like to see the big companies getting on the green recycling bandwagon. Not only will it help to cut costs, but it reuses pieces and parts that will end up in a landfill somewhere. And when these big companies show that doing something with recycled material is actually feasible and cost-effective, it sends a message out to the rest of the world that this type of practice works for them, and it will work for you!
This is where Canon, the huge electronics giant out of Japan with USA subsidiaries, enters the picture. They have begun to take their old and obsolete copiers and recycle the plastic inside, turning it into calculators! Both the LS-120TSG and the F-502G are constructed with 100 percent recycled plastic from the copiers, and the 120 is even solar-powered. The calculators are manufactured with the words "Made From Canon Copier Recycled Material" in the upper right-hand corner. That’s about as green as a calculator can get!
The EPA has also recognized Canon for their other contributions towards sustainability, and they have given them the prestigious WasteWise award. This award recognizes the effort Canon has made to both limit and reuse their own electronic waste. Among things noted are the comprehensive worldwide collection and refill of ink cartridges, re-manufacturing or refurbishing older products for reuse, and the implementation of such programs for its employees as duplex copies and reduction of office paper waste. They even have a discount beverage program for employees if they bring in their own mugs, instead of using disposable paper cups!
Canon can, and should be a model for all the other major electronics firms to follow, as well as any business office around the world. Ideas like using both sides of a piece of paper in a duplex copy, making sure that printing cartridges are collected—even home cartridges can be brought in to work—and something as simple as using your own glass or mug for a reduced beverage price, would save tons of paper and plastic from going into landfills.
Canon is certainly one of the leaders in the electronics world, and they have become a model for others to follow, Because Action speaks louder than words!
