I love candlelight, but doesn't everyone? There is nothing like the romantic glow of a burning candle. And in these times of energy saving, you could even make the case that candles are more efficient than light bulbs. The problem with this is that all candles are not created equal.
A regular candle is paraffin based which means it was made with some kind of petroleum product. Petroleum products not only give off sooty smoke, but also we use enough petroleum products in our cars. We don't really need to be burning it as candles too.
The kind of candles you want to look for are beeswax candles or soybean oil candles, which won't emit toxic smoke, and they also don't emit any soot either. As far as the flame goes, however, a flame is a flame, and will look just as romantic and pretty as any other flame. If it's an old flame, it might look better or worse depending on your perception of the situation. That question is for the age. It's not up to me.
Beeswax candles are the accepted norm when it comes to attractive burning. They look good in their natural golden color and are long lasting as well. If you want the classic tall and lean stick candle, then these are for you.
Soy candles are generally used in thick pillars, or poured into a mold and used in that shape. You can buy them in various scented types as well and they even come in a wickless variety. Yes, I know, I was befuddled when I first heard about wickless candles. But all that means is they are made to be heated up in a candle warmer so that the wax melts and releases whatever scent has been locked inside.
As always, when using any kind of candle, be careful. Fire is still fire, even from a candle, so a little caution goes a long way. Be responsible and enjoy all the romance, the ambiance and the small amount of energy saving a candle will bring to your place of residence. Remember, candles are not just for dinner anymore. So instead of switching on those overheads lights, use candles any place where only a little light is needed, and you'll be good to go.
