Beautifying Earth Month 2009

Beauty companies launch campaigns for a greener future

In our consumer-driven society, Earth Month would not be complete without the business world appealing to our eco-conscious sensibilities at a time of year when they are at their height. That’s why we need to be especially sensitive to greenwashing and support those organizations that demonstrate a green commitment all year long.

In celebration of Earth Month 2009, the always eco-conscious cosmetics company Origins is launching “Return to Origins” – a recycling program inspired by an article published in Allure magazine last year pointing to the growing problem of cosmetic waste.

Starting in April, every Origins location will have a receptacle in the store where you can drop off your used lipstick tubes, compact cases and other cosmetic packaging, regardless of the brand. Not only will Origins recycle them for you, but the company will give you a sample of its product as well. This event is not only taking place just during Earth Month, but all year long!

cAveda is another eco-conscious beauty company observing Earth Month with a big plan for a greener future. During the 30 days of April, their goal is to raise $3 million through 6K walk-a-thons – the 6K representative of the average distance that women in developing countries must walk to get clean drinking water for their families. Aveda sponsors Earth Month events like this every year, with the 2009 proceeds going toward global clean water initiatives.

Of course, hundreds of other organizations are going out of their way to raise awareness this Earth Month and especially on Earth Day itself – April 22, 2009.
